Wii Fit, Week 1 Recap
Week 1 was brutal folks, my fatness precedes me yet again. Thursday was day nine of owning the Wii Fit- I know this because the thing reminds me every time I log in: “You’re on day 9. You haven’t worked out in 4 days! Here’s how much you’ve gained since last time. You’re overweight.” Thanks, I think I’ve got it now!
Yes it’s true I hadn’t worked out in 4 days. I really had planned on doing it every day but I went from *nothing* to working out 5 times in the last 9 days- I consider that a bit of progress. Yes, it’s also true I’ve gained weight every time… except today - I believe I lost .02 pounds from my last weigh-in. Nice…
Now, I’m no scientist, but a little bit of math tells me that if I continue to lose .02 pounds every 4 days I should hit my mark in just under 11 years. Not too shabby. I’m starting to think that if I had just continued being lazy I would have seen better weight loss results through muscle atrophy.
I mentioned some trouble I was having with the weigh-in the first go around. I still believe that the carpet and unevenness in the floor may be throwing off my results. Even at my peak weigh-in (day 5), I was still getting slightly lower Wii Fit weights than on my bathroom scale, making a lot of these numbers arbitrary at this stage. Nonetheless I think the overall assessment is relatively accurate: I’m not losing any weight so far, no should I expect to unless I keep up a regular workout routine. Earth-shattering, no?
Wii Fit cannot and will not work wonders for you overnight - it is not really to be looked at as a weight loss tool. Based on what I know about basic exercise though, a good diet coupled with a regular Wii Fit workout could do a body pretty damn good. After only nine days I’ve unlocked a good number of exercises, thus opening up a pretty comprehensive selection of activities.
Possibly the most beneficial of the bunch are the aerobic exercises. I questioned the effectiveness of the activities at first glance, however I’ve managed to get my heart rate up for extended periods of time - the goal of any good workout routine. This is all due in part to the 10 minute run, one of several aerobic activities I unlocked.
The “running” activity does not use the Wii Balance Board. Rather, you actually keep the Wiimote in your pocket as you jog in place. If you slow down, it reminds you to keep your pace above 60%, but has no indicator of your current speed…strange. So far, jogging seems to have the most noticeable impact on my tolerance for prolonged activity. This is not a huge surprise to me, perhaps more of a wake-up call.
